Silver (top) and Sterling (bottom)
began their lives at animal swaps as babies in 1997. Many
breeders will claim that foxes make "wonderful" apartment pets
and can be trained like cats to use the litter box. Silver
foxes have a VERY strong musky odor that smells very much like
skunk. They are also very loud and vocal even in play,
sometimes emitting a sound that mirrors a woman screaming in
terror. They do not do well in apartments. Silver was raised by
a young couple with a small child. They claimed she was as tame
as a dog, but she is unhandleable despite her captive
upbringing. Silver is the only fox here who will on occasion
approach us just to bite. She will usually avoid us and move
away when we're in the cage, but she will snap at us if we
don't heed her warnings. Sterling was bought by a young girl at
the same swap despite Animals for Awareness strongly advising
her against it beforehand. By the time Sterling was 2 months
old, he was living here. He is a lot like Ghost in that he
loves human interaction and will also give kisses. Sterling
will also hold my arm in his mouth gently and rarely bites out
of aggression. However, we know that wild animals can never be
trusted completely.
