Ba'Si and Naudi came all the way from
Oregon in March of 2000. Their owner found us on the internet
and their story is a sad one, but not in a way that you'd
imagine. Ba'Si (left), born in 1996, was a spoiled only child
until Naudi (right), born in 1997, came along. The two of them
grew up together in a wonderful home filled with lots of love
and attention. They were probably treated better than most
human children. The owner, a sweet lady about my age, had the
foresight to know that they needed to be placed in a new
permanent home before she became completely incapacitated from
upcoming surgeries. She had just had her 23rd surgery! Many
tears and many discussions later, the two coatis arrived by
plane in Chicago. A monstrous cage was erected for them outside
where they peacefully share living space with 2 domestic
skunks. The first year was pretty tough on the coatis. They
were so bonded with the previous owner that they violently
rejected me. In situations like this, I can only hope to come
close in caring for them emotionally as well as the owner had.
The owner, once a stranger to AFA, is now a dear friend who
visits Ba'Si and Naudi 1 or 2 times every year. We do make
exceptions for exceptional people like her. Ba'Si (short for
Ba'Sieon Ahvon) means "my little kisser". Naudi (short for
Naudison) means "big nose". Naudi is good at ignoring
newcomers. Ba'Si is a bit more intimidating and will challenge
people she doesn't know. It took us a good year to bond with
her, but now she's a cuddle bug. Ba'Si still will sometimes
suddenly and without warning bite me!! Naudi is a real
sweetheart! We love these two characters! Pictured are Ba'Si
and Naudi with their previous owner Danyelle during a recent
visit.
