Mache was an owner give-up in 2003 or 2004.
We named him Mache because he was so dried out that his shell felt
like paper Mache. It was estimated back then that he was 30-40 years
old. This gentle giant is actually an import from Africa from many,
many years ago when importing tortoises was legal. Unlike most
tortoises where the females are bigger, the male leopard tortoise
may attain a bigger size than the female, a characteristic shared
with certain other members of the genus Geochelone, including
Galapagos tortoises. Mache is in perfect condition now. He's a
little shy, but he loves to walk around and show off his beautiful
shell.
