Lauren

Lauren is an awesome volunteer who's been with us since July, 2009 after finding us on the internet. She's our Friday volunteer, and she's a whirlwind when it comes to feeding and cleaning the animals. But cleaning and feeding aren't her only tasks. Lauren assists with educational programs and will hopefully be training to do them on her own someday soon. While Lauren likes all of the animals here at AFA, she does have a few favorites including our mountain lion Goliath, Boots the alligator and our genets.

Lauren's favorite part about volunteering at AFA is being around the animals. And when asked what her least favorite part about volunteering was, she responded, "The good outweighs the bad."

I asked Lauren how she felt AFA was different from other places she'd volunteered for in the past and she said that there's more animal contact and less supervision. Hmmm. Don't get the wrong idea. Our volunteers are fully trained before we let them loose on the animals! Lauren's most memorable moment is when Goliath got a hold of a towel and ate part of it. Thank God he pooped it out a couple of days later.

Lauren shares her Crestwood home with 3 birds, a tarantula, a corn snake, a ferret, a guinea pig and a bunch of fishies. When she isn't tending to her critters, she's working as a massage therapist, cosmetologist and hospital worker. As if her plate wasn't full enough, Lauren still finds time for hobbies such as lifting weights, scuba diving and anything else that involves animals. Lauren wants to someday work in a zoo or aquarium utilizing her animal experience and psych degree. She also wants to continue her massage therapy on people and animals, as well.

Lauren is a wonderful volunteer who picks up things quickly and easily. She is one of our few consistent and reliable volunteers who we can always count on to be there for us. Lauren has a good head on her shoulders and is great around the animals. She'll make an excellent educator when she finally makes that leap to the next level!
