We have volunteer April Henry to thank for steering 32 year old Jennie Shetina our way in June of 2009. She is quite the go-getter and will do anything we ask of her, even the stuff no one else wants to do! Jennie comes out with April every chance she can, and cleans cages, feeds animals and helps with offsite educational programs. She’s a true asset to the AFA team!
When I asked Jennie what her favorite part about volunteering was, she responded, “I love being around the animals and bringing my 9 year old daughter Claudia with me. Sharing the experience with her is wonderful.” We don’t allow children on the property, but we’ve made an exception for Jennie and Claudia for personal reasons. Admittedly, Claudia is an adorable and exceptionally well-behaved little girl!
About Jennie’s least favorite part…….well, the smell can be pretty bad sometimes. Yes, some of the animals do gross things!
When asked how AFA is different from other places she’s volunteered for in the past, Jennie replied, “The only other place I have ever volunteered at was a nursing home and I like taking care of animals a lot more then taking care of people. The animals are a lot nicer.” Generally speaking, Jennie, I think animal people get along with animals better than people
Jennie has two most memorable moments at AFA: “Taking Goliath (our cougar) to the vet will probably be one of the moments in my life that I will never forget and flooding the basement while cleaning our alligator Boots’ tank is a pretty good story too.” (our floor needed mopping anyway. hehehe)
Jennie says she likes all of AFA’s critters, except our Western Diamondback rattlesnake, but she admits she’s most fond of our old cougar Goliath. She isn’t without her own pets, however. Jennie shares her Joliet home with 2 cats (C.J. and Sasha), 2 sugar gliders (Zack and Cody), a bearded dragon (Puff), and a corn snake (Prince).
When she’s not working in the technical/customer support department for Dealertrack Inc., Jennie is enjoying being a mom to Claudia, which she says is the best part of her life.
What we say about Jennie...We love her!!! A hard worker with a great head on her shoulders, Jennie is reliable and consistent. She is one of the most easy going volunteers we have here at AFA, and she is so pleasant to be around. We hope she’s with us for a long, long time!
