Flicker

Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula

She earned this name fittingly, but at great cost to Kim. Flicker has bristle-like structures that she kicks off her body and into the air around her. These tiny objects, called urticating hairs, can penetrate skin or mucous membranes and cause pain and itching. This behavior helps her defend herself if she feels threatened. Kim is highly allergic to these hairs and breaks out like she has chicken pox after handling Flicker. Needless to say, she isn't handled anymore. Still, Flicker makes a great caged display animal, and kids are wowed by her beauty and her large size. These burrowing tarantulas come from the Pacific states of Mexico.
