We adore all of our volunteers, but Christy, who lives in Tinley Park,
adds her own flavor to the goings on at AFA. Christy heard about AFA
through Kim and David and has been volunteering on and off since 2001.
David was her college professor and her mentor in the substance abuse
program where she worked side by side with him as an intern. We’ve been
great friends ever since. Like all of our volunteers, Christy is
considered family.
Christy can honestly say that she has one of
the two most memorable moments at AFA… a moment she’ll never live down…
a moment all volunteers will remember hearing about. So what was it?
Aaaaaah,
I’d get in a lot of trouble with Christy if I shared it, but let’s just
say that it was so memorable that it dared not to be repeated. Christy
is a blast to work around, although we all admit that she comes in like
a tornado. She’ll make a huge, monstrous mess in the process of
cleaning… a mess so big that the rest of us panic over, but she always
manages to come full circle and tidy up. You can’t help but love her
dry sense of humor and her fun loving attitude!
Although Christy shares the mundane tasks of
cleaning, she’s also the very person we go to with projects that NO ONE
else wants to do. And although she may face the task with an, “Aw,
man!!!” or “You’re kidding, right?” she always come through for us.
Christy’s favorite part of volunteering for AFA is “being able to see
and interact with animals that you don’t get to see everyday.” But she
admits that her least favorite thing to do is clean the ferrets.
Christy’s most adored AFA critter is Kodiak, our beautiful Canadian
Lynx. She herself is caretaker to a cat, a Russian tortoise (compliments
of AFA) and a leopard gecko.
Christy is certified to work in a substance
abuse facility or program. She currently works as a teacher’s aid at a
facility for kids with behavior and emotional problems. Her ultimate
goal is to obtain her Master’s degree in Art Therapy. And Christy, with
her imagination and her compassion, will be great at that! So what does
she say about AFA? “LOVE YOU LOVE YOUR SHOW!! AFA is the most fun and
loving place I have been to that keeps animals from danger. I love Kim
and wish her all the best now that I’m working 7 days a week its hard
to get there as much as I would like to.”
