Adoptions

Our adoption policies vary depending on the type of animal being adopted. The well-being of every one of our animals is the most important thing to us, and we strive to find the perfect matches between critters and humans. For every adoption, the following goes without saying: Child holding Jasper

1.    You must agree to provide suitable housing, nutrition, and veterinary care (including necessary vaccinations and preventatives) for the duration of the pet's natural life.

2.    You must agree to provide exercise, love and positive attention for the pet on a daily basis and agree to always have a responsible person available to do the same in case of your extended absence.

3.     You must agree to refrain from being physically and verbally abusive towards this pet.

4.    If behavioral or medical problems arise or continue after adoption you must agree to seek appropriate, humane assistance in correcting problem(s) so that your pet can remain an active and accepted member of your household. This may include seeking veterinary assistance, specialized schooling/ training or modifications to your current living arrangement, i.e. child gates, moving valuables, etc...

5.    You must agree to contact Animals for Awareness before relinquishing ownership of the pet to any person or agency, including another animal shelter! At this time, we reserve the right to reclaim complete responsibility and ownership of the pet until another suitable home can be found. *In some instances, Animals for Awareness will waive the option to take back the animal if the current owner agrees to find an acceptable home and provides Animals for Awareness with the name, address and phone number of the new owner.

6.    You must agree to contact Animals for Awareness in the event you move, your pet is lost, euthanized or dies.

7.    In the event your pet becomes lost, you must agree to expend reasonable efforts to find him/her, including placing a lost ad in at least two (2) major local newspapers.

8.    Apartment dwellers and house renters must provide name and phone number of current landlord to verify acceptance of pet ownership. Boa Constrictor

In addition to the above:

Dogs/Cats

1.    Must be spayed or neutered before adoption or when the appropriate age is reached - Part of the adoption fee.

2.    Must be microchipped by a veterinarian at the expense of the new owner. Proof must be provided shortly after adoption.

3.    Must have collars AND ID tags on at all times. Optional for cats, but strongly suggested.

4.    Must NOT be housed outdoors.

Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, and Prairie Dogs

1.    Must be spayed or neutered before adoption or when the appropriate age is reached - Part of the adoption fee.

2.    Must not be housed outdoors.

Exotics

Animals for Awareness does not adopt exotics out to the general public in MOST cases. DO NOT CONTACT US ASKING WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE. If it's not listed in the adoption section, then we're not adopting it out! Adoption policies for exotics that are up for adoption are more stringent. In most cases, we require a USDA license and or documented proof of substantial LEGAL experience with the desired species, including name, address, and phone number of your current veterinarian, as well as your USDA number.
